  • Art historians all agree that English culture prepared the way for Art Nouveau, but at the same time assert that it was not in England, but on the European contenent that the style reached its maturity. The name is derived from Samuel Bing's art and crafts shop, "L'Art Nouveau", which opened in Paris in 1895. Until this time, the stylistic movement was called a variety of names, the earliest being the "Liberty Style" after the London shop of A. L. Liberty. Liberty's products, fabrics in particular, were exported to Italy, resulting in the Italian identity, "Stile Liberty". In Germany, it was called the Jugenstil" after a supportive magazine Jugend; and in Paris, the style "Metro" after Guimard's fantastic designs for the entrances to the Paris subway system. There are a host of other names, some originating casually, but for obscure reasons, they were gradually given up in favor of Art Nouveau, the characteristics of beauty, elegance and decorativeness being common to Western European culture before 1914.
