  • Highly elevated float lamps in an overall French Empire configuration suggest that the inspiration for the Carlton chandeliers comes from the increasingly popular gasoliers of the mid 19th century Europe. Tubular, hollow arms and supports held gas pipes and regulating taps were often scrolled details below the bowls. The functional components became in themselves the decorative features of the chandelier, enhanced with additional surface ornamentation where needed. The swelling outline of the float lamp bowls further reinforce the design origin, since at that time the Victorian Rococco revival style was very much in vogue.
