  • The ancesters of our present bowl-shaped pendant lighting fixtures are found in the interiors of ancient Roman houses and public buildings. Rome was principally lit by burning braziers, resinous wood torches, and huge oil-burning dishes. In clay, glass, stone or metal, the large shallow bowls like those in the Ostia fixtures were either suspended by thongs or chains from a hook on the ceiling, or supported on a tall wrought iron tripod base. Olive oil was the prefered burning fluid, with a fibre wick floating on its surface. During the renaissance, candles were commonplace in the home and the suspended oil bowl all but disappeared. Today, we have returned to the original Roman concept of a pendant with a reflector bowl and no shade, to cast light upward so as to give indirect, ambient illumination.
