  • Although French Empire in its overall configuration, the Vendome chandelier has 19th century characteristics which suggest it is partially inspired by the design for the increasingly popular gaseliers. Glass, often coloured, painted or etched, was the preferred medium for the shades and central bowl. The traditional shape of the small float lamp bowls have been retained to hide the gas burners. This flaring out of the shade persisted to the middle of the century. However, it is the treatment of the arms which belongs wholly to the 19th century. The design of the delicate leafy vine motif parallels that of many of the gas fixtures produced at this time.
